Abstract:
Many people know of the ozone in the stratosphere, which is the kind that creates a shield around the Earth from the sun's UV rays . However what most do not realize is that there is also ozone present in the troposphere which is very harmful to the earth and is unfortunately man made. This is because troposphere ozone, or ground level ozone, is a type of ozone made by a chemical reaction of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOC's), and sunlight. These hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and VOC's come from transportation exhaust (ex. cars), industrial plants (ex.factories), our energy (ex.coal), and other activities which would release such substances. If we breath in ground level ozone our respiratory system is injured (severity due to amount of exposure) and if plants get exposed to ground level ozone the leaves and tissues will die which can, if exposed to high levels, kill the whole plant. Some things we can do to limit ozone production/lower ozone levels include carpooling, or even using public transportation, biking, or walk whenever possible, using environmentally safe paints and cleaning products whenever possible and conserving energy at home or at work. In my paper I will be elaborating on the topics discussed and will relate it to Islam as well.
